The words we use

Four words do most of the work: a quiz is made of rounds, you save it as a pack, and you play it as a game. Here’s each one, and the rest you’ll meet.

Building a quiz

Quiz
A list of rounds, in order. You build it on the Quiz tab, and you can have as many as you like.
Round
One question: one song clip, one noise, one picture, one text question or one mini-game. Not the pub-quiz kind of round with ten questions in it. A ten-round quiz asks ten things. See the kinds of round.
Pack
A saved quiz. Press Save pack and it lands on the Packs tab, ready to load, copy or play again. See packs.
Library
Your sounds and pictures, on the Sounds and Pictures tabs. Add something once and use it in as many quizzes as you like.
Right answer and wrong answers
Every round but a mini-game gives players two, three or four answers to pick from: the right one and the wrong ones. You type the right one; Tossup can fill the wrong ones.
Standard, Tricky, Devious
How hard the wrong answers are. Standard picks the usual sort, Tricky picks ones from the same world, and Devious picks ones that are nearly right.
Question clip and reveal clip
The two pieces of a song or noise a round plays: the question clip while everyone guesses, and the reveal clip when the answer shows. Pick the chorus for the reveal.
Host console
Where you build: the tabs Sounds, Pictures, Games, Quiz and Packs. Only you see it.

On the night

Game
A quiz played live, with a room code. You can play the same pack as many times as you like, and each time is a new game.
Host
You: the person who builds the quiz and runs the big screen. The host doesn’t answer. You know the answers, after all.
Player
Anyone answering on their phone. Players need no app and no account, only the room code.
Room code
The short code on the big screen. Players type it at tossup.gg/join, or scan the QR code beside it.
Big screen
The screen everyone watches: a TV, a projector, or your screen shared on a call. It shows the rounds and the scores, never the answers before the reveal.
Lobby
The waiting room before the first round. Names pop up as people join, and you set the game’s timing here.
Reveal
The moment the right answer shows, with the fastest right answer named. Cue the shouting.
Scoreboard
The standings between rounds. The last one is Final scores, with a podium and a few awards.
Streak bonus
Extra points for right answers in a row. A wrong answer only costs the streak.
